Installed an app last week, got an email two days later: leave a 5-star review and they'll upgrade us to their top plan for free, forever.
Feels off. Is this normal in the Shopify app world? Does the App Store do anything about it? Should I take the deal?

It's more common than it should be and it's against the App Store review policy — incentivised reviews aren't allowed. It's also part of why we weight review counts lightly and read the 1-3 star reviews when picking apps for the categories here.
Whether to take the deal is up to you, but the honest move is to write the review you'd have written anyway and mention the offer in it. Also worth knowing: "lifetime" plans tend to last until the app is acquired.

Been offered this three times. Declined all three. Two of those apps are now gone from the store.

took a deal like this in 2024. got the free plan for 8 months then they "restructured pricing" and it vanished. wouldn't again.
