You're not missing anything — that pricing is built for stores with thousands of subscribers. Anything running on Shopify's native subscription API (which all the newer ones do) will give you the same core: subscribe & save, customer portal, failed-payment retries. Several start free and the paid tiers kick in around $10-20/mo.
At 40 subs you'd struggle to spend $10/mo. Look at the Subscriptions category picks here, the cheaper two are exactly this.

Okay that's a relief. Migrated to one of the free-tier ones over the weekend. Existing subscribers stayed subscribed (it uses Shopify's contracts so nothing broke). Portal is actually nicer than what we had.

Only reason to pay for the big one at small scale is if you need their analytics or a headless build. Otherwise you're paying for a brand.
